Maspalomas Dunes
The Dunas de Maspalomas, the iconic sand dunes of Gran Canaria, are an impressive natural reserve where desert-like landscapes meet the Atlantic coast. I visited early in the morning to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and soft light. There are several entrances and nearby parking areas, and from there you follow the designated walking paths that wind through the dunes toward the lighthouse and the beach.
The dunes are part of a protected nature reserve, which also includes a freshwater lagoon known as the Maspalomas Water Reserve. This lagoon is home to a variety of birds, making it an important stop for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Staying on the marked paths is essential to protect the fragile ecosystem, preserve the dunes, and safeguard the plants and wildlife that live here.
Quick Tips for Visiting:
• Best time: Early morning or late afternoon for soft light and tranquility.
• Footwear: Comfortable shoes or sandals; sand can get hot in summer.
• Water & sun: Bring water, sun protection, and a hat.
• Stay on paths: Always follow the designated walking trails to protect the nature reserve and wildlife.
• Respect wildlife: The lagoon is home to many birds—avoid disturbing them and the surrounding plants.
