Barranco de las Vacas

Barranco de las Vacas is one of the most unique places you can visit in Gran Canaria. The ravine has been shaped over many years by wind and water, creating beautiful curved rock walls in red, orange, and white tones.

I went early in the morning to avoid the crowds, and it made a big difference. It was quiet, peaceful, and much more enjoyable without too many people around.

I parked at the original parking area, which is just a small dirt lot right next to the entrance. From there, the walk is short—about 10 minutes—but there is a bit of a slope. You walk downhill on the way in, which is easy, but remember you’ll have to walk back up on the way out. It’s not too hard, but you’ll definitely feel it a little, especially if it’s hot.

To get into the barranco, you pass through a small tunnel, and then suddenly you’re surrounded by these amazing rock formations. The path is narrow and a bit winding, but that’s part of what makes it so special. At the end, you get to see the most impressive part, where the rocks almost look like waves.

The name “Barranco de las Vacas” means “Ravine of the Cows,” because in the past, farmers used this path to move their cattle.

It’s a beautiful place, but it can get very busy later in the day. That’s why it’s important to be respectful—park properly, don’t block the road, and take care of the area so everyone can enjoy it.

Quick Tips for Visiting:

  • Best time: Early morning or late afternoon
  • Parking: Use the dirt parking area and don’t block the road
  • Walk: About 10 minutes, with a bit of uphill on the way back
  • Shoes: Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes
  • Bring: Water, sunscreen, and maybe a hat
  • Be respectful: Stay on the path and don’t climb the rocks
